Tom Martorell, writer and historian

Tom Martorelli began his career writing evidence summaries for the Watergate Special Prosecution Force – the first use of a computerized database in a federal prosecution. It required skills that have become the building blocks for digital communication: character counts, searchable key words, data security. Research and informed story-telling, yes. But for an audience of lawyers learning the power of new media. Lessons to be remembered, and shared.

His work includes managing director for Discovery Communications’ Pavilion at Coca-Cola Olympic City in Atlanta, GA; The Mellon Foundation/Appalachian Mountain Club’s National Volunteer Project in seven US cities; strategic plans for multiple community health centers and nonprofit organizations; and “Whodunit? The Science of Solving Crime,” for the Fort Worth Museum of Science and Industry.

An entrepreneur, he has started more than a dozen nonprofits and three small companies. He has been a CMO, COO, and CFO. He has collaborated with Road Scholar Travel, Boston College, the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, Samsonite, Super Bowl XXXIII, and H3 Biomedicine / TransPOC in Cambridge, MA. International experience includes Trafalgar Travel (Great Britain), the African Economic and Community Development Foundation (projects in Cameroon), and This & That retail (Switzerland).

Tom has worked with the League on several initiatives throughout the past few years. In our shared service research study, Tom produced a report detailing the top five needs from our members. His report synthesized in-depth interviews from over 30 community health centers into a user friendly, informative document that was truly exceptional. His ability to create a comfortable and safe, yet thought-provoking and intellectually challenging space where people he has never met are able to express their needs and develop their ideas is truly remarkable.
